Dear Dr. Kyung-wha-Kang
President of Asia Society,

I hope this message finds you well. I am writing this open letter to address a matter of profound historical and humanitarian significance. As we observe the Independence Days of Pakistan and India on August 14 and 15, it is deeply troubling that the victims of the partition of India have yet to be adequately remembered or honored. This chapter of history, marked by immense human suffering, deserves recognition and reflection.

The partition remains one of the most tragic events in modern history, marked by widespread suffering, including riots, mass murders, rapes, and abductions, rarely seen in human history. Despite the gravity of these events, there has been a lack of concerted effort to memorialize and commemorate the victims and their enduring legacy.

To address this, I propose that your organization observe an annual program similar to the 9/11 memorials in the United States. This event would serve as a solemn reminder of the immense suffering endured by millions during this tragic period. By highlighting these horrors, we can honor the memories of those who perished and ensure that such a dark chapter in history is never forgotten. Such an observance would not only pay tribute to the victims but also promote healing and reconciliation by acknowledging the pain and trauma that continue to affect the descendants of those who lived through this time.

Furthermore, it is essential for your organization to leverage its influence to encourage the governments of Bangladesh, India, and Pakistan to build memorials and museums in various cities that depict the horrors and tragedies of the partition. These memorials would serve as constant reminders of the past and as places of learning and reflection, fostering peace and understanding among future generations. Additionally, these governments should promote events that commemorate the partition, ensuring that the lessons of history are never forgotten and that such tragedies are prevented from recurring.

It is crucial to remember these events with the same seriousness and respect as other global tragedies, recognizing the deep scars left on both nations. This annual remembrance, along with the establishment of memorials and museums, would provide platforms to educate future generations about the devastating consequences of communal violence, emphasizing the importance of peace, tolerance, and unity in preventing such tragedies in the future.

Thank you for your time. I trust that your organization will consider this issue to be highlighted and remembered every year.

Kindest regards,
