Richard Nuttall: “I think the biggest thing for us is, make sure you’re of sound character as a person. You have got to have done your homework in school, literally - you have got to be a good student. And then open-minded and have the ability to adapt when you get here. Because the style of soccer here is very different than back home.
Generally, we’ll recruit a player in his junior year in terms of American standards. But sometimes, we only come across them in their senior year, and it moves very quickly. Sometimes, you can recruit somebody in March and in August they’re a student at your school. But of course, the earlier, the better because of the signing periods and things like that. But very flexible, we have rolling admissions here at Hofstra, so that’s easy. Some schools have deadline days. So it’s very different from school to school.” 🗣

Richard Nuttall, a former professional soccer player in England and a former member of the Long Island Rough Riders, completed his 32nd season as Hofstra University Head Men’s Soccer Coach in 2020-21. Nuttall has guided the Pride to a 290-245-75 record in transforming the program into one of the most competitive in the Northeast.

Nuttall, the winningest coach in program history, has led his team to a Colonial Athletic Association Tournament appearance in 10 of the past 11 seasons, including the finals in 2015, 2018, and 2020. The Pride has won four CAA Championships under his direction (2004, 2005, 2006, 2015), and he has coached Hofstra to a .500 record or better in 11 of the past 12 years, including nine straight campaigns.
