This story comes from a former U.S. Army soldier who was deployed to Forward Operating Base Shank in eastern Afghanistan — a place many soldiers nicknamed “Rocket City.”

But this soldier’s terror didn’t come from mortars.

It came from what he found beneath the base.

And from what followed him back.

In 2013, during his second tour, he was assigned to a night watch post just off the main perimeter.

A boring detail, he said — until his third night there.

That’s when he noticed a metal grate near the edge of the fence.

Something about it felt wrong. Too old. Too clean. Not military-issued.

And definitely not on any of the base schematics.

Curiosity got the better of him.

He came back alone the next night with a flashlight and pried it open.

Beneath was a tunnel — dry, narrow, and lined with rusted symbols he said “didn’t feel human.”

He made it about 50 feet before his radio cut out.

Then the air changed — heavy, static, wrong.

And something… began following him in the dark.

For the next three nights, he dreamed of red sand and whispers in a language he didn’t know.

His roommate said he spoke in tongues in his sleep.
