Though not an ancient Egyptian monument, the Pharos (or Lighthouse of Alexandria) was built as the beacon of a new age in Egypt. Its promise was grand: Egypt was sovereign once more, but it was part of an international community, and would never again be at the centre of its own universe.

The Lighthouse lasted well into the mediaeval period, but what brought it down in the end: foreign sabotage, or mother nature herself?
