Over the past century, much of Gettysburg’s Black history has been destroyed. Despite considerable efforts to preserve the historic structures of Gettysburg, little has been done to safeguard the historically Black section of town known as the Third Ward. Schools, churches, businesses, and private residences of great significance to the town’s Black community have been erased from the landscape, and while excellent public and private museums throughout the town chronicle the stories of families with familiar names like Rupp, Wade, and Wills, no place exists for visitors to experience and appreciate the stories of people like Jack, Julia, and Edward Hopkins.

In the first episode of our new series, "Uncovering the Jack Hopkins House," Gettysburg College grad (2024) and current IUP graduate student James Duke provides a behind-the-scenes look at the archaeological study he conducted at the Hopkins House over the past few months.
