After being nursed back to health, she was released into a protected reserve. Sometime later, the rescue team saved a tiny, orphaned baby pangolin, or "pangopup," who was too young to survive alone. In a risky but hopeful move, they placed the chirping pup near the rescued female's burrow. The carers watched nervously as the female emerged and cautiously sniffed the tiny orphan. Then, her instincts took over. She gently nudged the baby, who immediately latched onto the base of her tail. She had adopted him. This survivor, once a victim herself, became a surrogate mother, raising the orphan in the wild and giving him a second chance at life—an incredible, heartwarming victory for the conservationists fighting to save this precious species.
