Mustard is one of those condiments most of us assume is pretty straightforward—just mustard seeds, vinegar, maybe water or spices. But when look at a few different well known jars, you may be surprised that some of them add sugar, preservatives, flavourings or xanthan gum in the Colman’s!

To be clear - I’m not in any way saying we shouldn’t eat these mustards! I do as I love mustard! But I believe in being informed and I think many people would be surprised to find out that sugar in particular is being added to very well known mustard brands. Yes the amount of sugar you’d be having in mustard is very small, however these little bits of hidden sugar all over the place in different products that you wouldn’t expect all adds up in the day and many people are largely unaware of these hidden sugars they’re consuming. I wish these food companies would just remove it as it’s not necessary in mustard! But of course it makes products more palatable and therefore we’re likely to eat more which is what they are aiming for to increase sales.

What I actually found quite surprising was that French’s American mustard didn’t have sugar or preservatives or thickener like the other more premium brands— just flavourings like the others also had! I definitely wouldn’t have guessed that by looking at the brand!

It’s just another reminder that the branding or front of pack labelling tells us nothing about what’s in the food we’re buying, we are only truly informed by reading the ingredients and nutritional info on the back of the pack.
