SWADESHI MOVEMENT (1903-08)
• SM saw the emergence all the major political trends of Indian national movement:
• Moderation to extremism,
• Terrorism to incipient socialism,
• Petitioning to public resistance & boycott etc.
SM was a direct outcome of Partition of Bengal: 2 phases
(I) 1903-05 i.e. from Announcement to Actual partitions- Period dominated by Moderates
– The leadership was provided by men like Surendranath Banerjea, K.K. Mitra and Prithwishchandra Ray
– Spontaneous protest followed the announcement
– Hundreds of protest meetings held
– Several newspapers like: Bengali, Hitabadi carried out propaganda against partition.
– On the whole, this phase was marked by Dominance of Moderate techniques of petitions, public meetings & press campaigns.
– The aim was to pressurize the Govt. to relent, a hope that was belied.

(II) 1905-8: Extremist phase of movement
• Ignoring a loud public opinion against the partition proposal, the government announced partition of Bengal in July 1905.
• Formal proclamation of Swadeshi made at a meeting held at Calcutta on 7th August, 1905 & the boycott resolution was also passed.
• 16th October 1905: Day of partition declared a day of mourning throughout Bengal.
• S&B Began- led by S.N. Bannerjee, A.K. Dutt, Aurbindo Ghosh, Bipin Chandran pal
• Soon the movement spread to other parts of the country.
(i) Tilak gave it leadership in Maharashtra.
(ii) Lala Lajpat Rai & Ajit Singh in Punjab & other parts of N. India.
(iii) Syed Haider Raza: Delhi
(iv) Chidambaram pillai Madras presidency.
• Gradually it engulfed a large part of India and also transformed from an Anti-partition movement to a movement for Swaraj.
