📜 Fun Facts & History:

These trestles were built in the early 1900s as part of the Camas Prairie Railroad, a line often called the “Railroad on Stilts” because of its many wooden and steel bridges.

The Lawyer’s Canyon trestle, completed in 1908, stretches more than 1,400 feet long and towers about 280 feet above the creek — making it one of the tallest and longest in the region.

The line was critical for moving grain, timber, and passengers across the rugged landscape of north-central Idaho, connecting the Camas Prairie to Lewiston and beyond.

Though freight traffic has slowed and routes have changed over time, the trestles remain a testament to early 20th-century engineering, standing as historic landmarks along Highway 95.

The canyon is named for a Nez Perce leader known as Lawyer, who was a prominent figure during treaty negotiations in the 1800s.

⚠️ Traveler’s note: Pullouts along Highway 95 allow you to stop and take in the view — it’s one of the most breathtaking spots on the drive between Craigmont and Ferdinand.
