Film critic Nick Duncalf reviews Abel Ferrara's controversial new drama Welcome to New York, starring Gerard Depardieu. A financial high flyer's life spirals out of control, resulting in charges of sexual assault.

Director Abel Ferrara, who made King of New York and Bad Lieutenant, has made an obscene, debauched film in Welcome to New York, about the arrogance of money and power and entitlement, with an eye-opening performance from Gerard Depardieu. They're at pains to say, the filmmakers, that it's not based on the life of Dominique Strauss-Kahn, former head of the IMF, who was accused of sexual assault, but the storyline is almost exactly the same as what happened there. Gerard Depardieu arrives in New York for one night - and by the end of that night he's had sex with two lots of prostitutes, blondes and then brunettes, and you've seen a whole lot more of Gerard Depardieu than you ever really want to see. You realise that women, for men of power and money, are really just there as objects of gratification, he's utterly unrepentant when he's accused of sexually assaulting a chambermaid, he doesn't really understand what he's done wrong. Jacqueline Bisset is absolutely great as his icily cold wife, there are some non-actors in the other parts who are really terrific as well, but this is Depardieu's movie: debauched, wheezing, grunting - it's a powerhouse performance from him.
