While 1929 will forever be remembered for the infamous stock market crash that caused widespread financial panic that October, the Hudson Motor Car Company ranked a solid third in industry sales rankings. Breaking from tradition for 1929, Hudson began phasing out the famed “Super Six” nameplate in use since 1916 in favor of “The Greater Hudson.” Introduced in January 1929, the new-for-1929 Hudsons were offered in Model R form on a 122 ½-inch wheelbase and Model L with a 139-inch wheelbase chassis.

All 1929 Hudsons featured greater interior room and freedom of design with bodies now four inches longer than before and featuring larger windshields of shatterproof glass and narrower A-pillars. A list comprising 64 improvements applied to Hudson models for 1929 included hydraulic-double-action shock absorbers, self-energizing brakes, and “silenced roof construction.” Standard Hudson features for 1929 were many, including an electric fuel and oil gauge, windshield wipers, rearview mirror, and “electrolock” anti-theft device. In all, 26 standard features were listed for the 1929 Hudson models.
