Up to this point every time I came across a Huret Duopar Eco derailleur, they were replaced straight away with a Suntour or Shimano unit. It eliminated all reliability problems and risk when it comes to fully loaded unsupported touring. There was no chance that I would be hundreds of miles and days away from a bike shop to make a repair. When these Cannondale ST500 showed up, that's when I ran straight into the problem. A couple of days ago I decided to look into it and this is what I found. It doesn't take me long to dissect and engineering problem to find the weakness. No difference here either. What a mess, and errors were made by Huret management all the way down to manufacturing. The penalty for this kind of inattention and lack of qualities is everyone gets to loose their job and the company goes out of business.

First off, if you have this on an aluminum frame bike and kept the binder bolt loose so that the derailleur would pivot, you have a 100% problem. Your threaded derailleur mounting hole is stripped. Remove the wheels, remove the rear derailleur, and take the frame and the mounting screw to a machine shop, and ask them to install a threaded insert to replace the threads. It might be called helicoil. There are others on the market. A stainless steel threaded insert will repair your frame. Should cost no more than $50.

If you are handy, you can buy a kit and do it yourself. However you will need to go the hardware store and verify the diameter and thread spacing.

Have you seen or used sutherlandsbicycle.com? Their product Mechanics Handbook CD has information you cannot find on the Internet for bicycle repair.
