The Dell PowerEdge R730 server is a dual processor system. The CPU socket inside is an LGA2011-3 socket, which means that the R730 utilizes Intel Xeon E5-2600 v3 or v4 series processors. Please note, that in order to use the v4 processors, you must have an updated BIOS. In general, it is always a good idea to keep everything on your system up to date, which you can learn how in our Mass Updates video. Below are some of the CPUs that we recommend. This list is not a complete list, but it consists of a handful of great procs within the E5-2600v3 and v4 series.

In this video, we also show you how to remove and replace your old processor. It is important to not damage the pins in the CPU socket when removing the old processor. It is also important to make sure old thermal paste doesn’t get into the socket. We will show you how to handle your CPU and perform a CPU upgrade. These step-by-step instructions are great for beginners as well as those who need a refresher.
