Despite being held at home to a draw by Romania, England move to the brink of qualifying for the 1986 World Cup in September 1985 at Wembley. Glenn Hoddle gives England the lead, before Rodion Camataru levels despite protests from Peter Shilton of handball (not the last time in this World Cup campaign he would have such a complaint after a goal he conceded!). Youngster Gheorghe Hagi catches the eye by twice hitting the woodwork for Romania, who miss out on qualifying as they finish behind England and Northern Ireland.
