What Is A Smith and Nephew Knee Implant?

Dr. Broome: My preferred knee implant is one from a company called Smith and Nephew and a large part is because they're the only company with this black metallic surface is actually Oxidized Zirconium or they call it Oxinium. But it behaves more like a ceramic. So when you put it on this polyethylene spacer, there's going to be less wear over time. When we do knee replacements, I think it's really important to talk to your surgeon about the design of your knee. What's best for you because not all companies have a knee replacement that's the same. There was a really popular commercial out several years ago called "The Get Around Knee" and they showed a bowling ball going around down the bowling alley then an oblong bowling ball. They act like you want your knee to be perfectly round, well our natural knee is not perfectly round so on one side of the knee and they have a larger curvature than the other. The knee that I like from Smith and Nephew is designed to more naturally match your normal anatomy and so when we do the knee replacements, we trim up the diseased cartilage, but we have the bone that basically just caps the end of the bone the implant that caps the end of the bone there so we really just resurfaced it. And on the shinbone side, this is showing the same thing, we trim up that surface bone and we have an implant with this little fin that goes on the inside and then a little polyethylene or plastic spacer there. So when it's all said and done, that makes up your new knee replacement. And I think just looking at this model, you can see that when I bend the knee back, it pivots here instead of just going straight up and down and that's the reason it does so is the design of the implant our normal knee functions just like that. So the goal with this if we got a knee that is going to last longer, hopefully than the traditional knee implants and also going to feel more natural so we want you to recover quicker and have less pain but we also we also want you to be able to do more with this knee.
