Episode 873: The war
After killing Abhimanyu, everyone withdrew to their respective camps. At that time, the jackals howled inauspiciously.
Abhimanyu lay on the battlefield like a fire devoid of radiance. He was mighty, equal to Indra. His garments were torn. His ornaments lay scattered. The enemies had slaughtered him in a most terrible and horrific manner.
Remembering the terrible battle & with their minds fixed on Abhimanyu, the Pandava chariot-warriors sat near Dharmaraja.
Grieving greatly, Dharmaraja said, “Abhimanyu defeated Krpacharya, Shalya, Duryodhana, Drona, Ashwatthama & other great warriors. To give me happiness, he easily entered Drona’s impenetrable army, & defeated only battle-experts, heroes, and Maharathas.
He broke Drona’s Chakravyuha, which even the gods cannot break. Slaying enemies, he performed heroic exploits. He even rendered unconscious Dushasana, who was the greatest warrior among the enemies & made him flee from battle. Finally, he died at the hands of Dushasana’s son.
How can I show my face to Arjuna? How should I speak to Subhadra, who lost her beloved son? How should I tell this bad news to Sri Krishna and Arjuna? I alone am the cause of all this. Desiring victory and for my own happiness, I caused pain to Subhadra’s heart & to the minds of Krishna and Arjuna.
I have greed. A greedy man cannot recognize faults. Because of greed and delusion, he commits evil acts. I desired honey, but did not notice that I would fall into such a pit.
Abhimanyu was a tender & lovable child. We placed that youthful child, who was inexperienced in warfare, at the front of the battle. I wish I had also died along with him.
Arjuna will surely blaze with anger on hearing this news. We will be burned by his glance. Arjuna protects even enemies who seek refuge in him. Yet today all of us together could not protect his son.
Now a great calamity has descended upon the powerful Kauravas. Arjuna will now become extremely angry & will destroy them.
Duryodhana is wicked and supported only by wicked people. Seeing his entire side destroyed by Arjuna, he will grieve and give up his life. This is true. I understand this clearly.
Indra’s grandson Abhimanyu possessed unparalleled valour. After his death, I do not want victory. Neither kingdom, nor going to heaven gives me happiness”.
When Dharmaraja was grieving, Bhagavan Vyasa came there. Dharmaraja worshipped him, told him about Abhimanyu’s death and said,
‘O great sage! On the battlefield, many heroes and great warriors took refuge in adharma & killed Abhimanyu.
Powerful Abhimanyu slew enemy warriors. He was a child. He fought without proper equipment. I told him to show the way to enter the Chakravyuha. But as soon as he entered it, Saindhava blocked us.
Kshatriyas must fight only with warriors equal to themselves. But the battle waged by the enemies was unjust & unequal.
Therefore, I am in total grief. Recalling this battle, I am unable to attain peace. This happened in an extremely terrible and cruel manner,’ he lamented.
Maharshi Vyasa said, ‘O learned one! You are intelligent & know all scriptures. People like you should not become deluded when hardships come. Abhimanyu is a hero & best among men. He destroyed many enemies, performed deeds worthy of great heroes & attained the hero’s heaven.
Dharmaraja! No person can cross destiny. Death destroys even gods, demons, and Gandharvas”.
Dharmaraja said, “Many powerful kings died. Some possessed strength equal to 10000 elephants & speed equal to the wind. In battle, only equals slew them. This is dharma. The word “died” is meaningful for them. It fits.
O great sage! Why has the name mrti come to all of them? Why does Mrtyu (death) kill beings?”
Maharshi Vyasa said, ‘O king! I will tell you the ancient account narrated by Narada Maharshi to king Akampana who suffered unbearable sorrow due to his son’s death. I will tell you that excellent story of Mrtyu’s birth. By hearing it, the sorrow caused by bonds of attachment will leave you.
Mrtyu’s birth-story destroys all masses of sins. It bestows wealth, longevity & destroys grief. It increases nourishment. Hearing it destroys enemies. It grants auspiciousness greater than all auspicious things. It gives the fruit of studying the Vedas.
Great kings who desire long-lived sons, kingdom, and prosperity should hear this story. Listen to it.
In Krta Yuga, King Akampana was captured by enemies in battle. His handsome & intelligent son Hari was equal to Srihari in strength. In battle he was like Indra.
When enemies surrounded him, he released thousands of arrows upon warriors and elephants. When he was fighting, they suddenly surrounded him and killed him.
Akampana, grieving deeply, performed his son’s funeral rites. Day and night he cried. Knowing Akampana’s sorrow, Narada Maharshi came to him. Akampana worshipped him & explained how his son was brutally killed.
