Episode 872: Abhimanyu’s death
With 50 arrows, Karna pierced Abhimanyu’s entire body. In return, Abhimanyu made blood flow from Karna’s body. Abhimanyu killed Karna’s 6 ministers along with their horses & charioteers.
He killed Magadha prince Ashvaketu, his horses and charioteer. He wounded Martikavata King Bhoja with a sharp arrow & roared loudly.
Then Duśśasana’s son struck Abhimanyu, his 4 horses, and charioteer. Abhimanyu immediately shot ten arrows & wounded him. He killed the 5 heroes Shatruñjaya, Chandraketu, Meghavega, Suvarcha, and Suryabhanu & severely wounded Shakuni.
Shakuni ran to Duryodhana and said, “Abhimanyu is sparing no one. Let us collectively torment him”.
Then Karna said to Drona, “O Acharya! Before he kills us, let us kill him. Please tell the means.”
Then Drona said, “See if there is any small flaw in this boy. He is releasing arrows with immeasurable speed. In battle, only his circular bow is visible. He is tormenting our lives with his arrows. He is almost making me faint. Yet seeing him moving swiftly on this battlefield, I cannot contain my happiness.
Even the greatest maharathas cannot find a flaw in his fighting. I cannot find any difference between him and Arjuna”.
Karna said, “O Acharya! Though Abhimanyu is tormenting me, I remain in battle only because I must. His arrows are extremely dreadful. They tear my heart.”
Drona said, “Let us shoot arrows and break his bow and bowstring. Kill his horses. Cut the reins. Kill the flank guards and charioteer. Make Abhimanyu withdraw from battle and strike him from behind. Even gods and demons cannot defeat him when he holds a bow. So shatter his chariot & deprive him of his bow,”
Karna swiftly broke Abhimanyu’s bow. Krtavarma swiftly killed the horses. Kripa swiftly slew the flank guards and charioteer.
Suddenly, Abhimanyu was without a chariot & bow. Then 6 chariot-warriors poured arrows upon him. Yet he did not lose courage. He took sword and shield and leapt. He displayed special battle movements. Showing strength, leaping repeatedly, he moved through the sky swiftly like Garuda.
Drona quickly shot a sharp arrow and shattered his sword. Karna shot sharp arrows and shattered the shield. Abhimanyu fell to the ground.
Enraged, he lifted a chariot wheel and rushed toward Drona. His body shone with the radiance of that wheel. It was covered in dust. Like Krishna bearing the discus, Abhimanyu, for a moment, appeared terrifying to all on the battlefield. Even the gods could not bear to look at that terrible form. He shone like a second Krishna.
In great fright, the kings broke even that chariot wheel. Then Abhimanyu saw a mace. Immediately, he grasped it and confronted Ashvatthama. Seeing it, Ashvatthama stepped back in fright.
Abhimanyu struck Ashvatthama’s horses with the mace and killed them. He also killed the 2 guards who protected the wheels.
Even when all the enemies kept shooting arrows at him, he did not care. He fought. With arrows sticking out, he looked like a porcupine.
He moved swiftly and, with the mace, killed Subala’s son Kalikeya, his 70 Gandhara warriors, 10 Vasātiya chariot-warriors, 7 Kekaya chariots, 10 elephants & the horses in Dushasana’s son’s chariot.
Dushasana’s son angrily seized a mace & rushed toward Abhimanyu. They fought a mace-duel & fell to the ground. Duśśāsana’s son quickly rose up, holding his mace, and struck Abhimanyu hard on the head.
Abhimanyu was exhausted after a long fight. Due to exhaustion and the severe blow, he fell dead.
Thus, many together killed the single Abhimanyu.
The fallen Abhimanyu was like the sun that had set after scorching heat. After tormenting the Kaurava army greatly, he fell. His curls covered his eyes.
Seeing Abhimanyu dead, your maharathas rejoiced greatly. All heroes on the Pandava side shed tears.
The celestial beings condemned saying, “Drona, Karna and the other Maharathas on Drtarashtra’s side united. The 6 Maharathas isolated Abhimanyu and killed him. We do not accept this adharma”.
Abhimanyu, lying on the ground, shone with the radiance of sun and moon. Seeing him, your people felt only joy. All began roaring loudly like lions. Seeing Abhimanyu, the Pandava side was deeply distressed.
Abhimanyu was a boy who had not yet even fully entered youth. He died while Dharmaraja was watching from afar.
Dharmaraja, grieving, calmed the other heroes saying, “Abhimanyu fought without retreating. He adorned the heroic heaven. Therefore, stop the fleeing armies. Stand firm and fight. Do not fear. Surely we shall conquer the enemies”.
Abhimanyu slew 10000 warriors, killed the maharatha king of Kosala and reached the eternal heroic heaven. He followed Kshatriya Dharma, performed righteous deeds & reached the eternal worlds attained by the virtuous through merit.
It was evening. Both armies withdrew from the battle.
