JOPLIN "Bethena Waltz" for Brass Quintet

For many, Scott Joplin’s “Bethena” is a surprising departure from the music for which he became so noteworthy. It is a musical gem, nonetheless. He composed this piece shortly following the very untimely death (at age 20, from pneumonia) of his wife, Freddie Alexander. They had been married only ten weeks. The music is not maudlin or despairing, however. Instead, the piece begins with a sweet and lovely melody which returns later in the piece and at the end, separated by other rather energetic and exuberant moments.
