During the Fall 2022 semester, UC Hastings Law hosted Emerson Sykes, Staff Attorney for the ACLU, for a Practitioner-in-Residence Event Series. His keynote remarks for the campus community on the topic of "Free Speech, Academic Freedom, and Racial Justice: An ACLU Lawyer’s Perspective" were a practitioner’s personal view of how and why the First Amendment can be a tool for progressive social change based on his experiences from South Africa to South Los Angeles.
