Located in Andalucía in southern Spain, the beautiful city of Málaga is widely known as the capital of the Costa del Sol. Each year, an estimated six million visitors are drawn to the city to enjoy its mild Mediterranean climate, stunning coastline, and golden beaches. With a history spanning more than 2,800 years, Málaga is considered one of the oldest continuously inhabited cities in Europe.

Thanks to its strategic port, Málaga has long played a key role in Mediterranean trade routes and has been shaped by some of the region’s greatest civilizations. Founded by the Phoenicians, the city later flourished under Greek, Roman, and Arab rule, each leaving a lasting imprint on its culture, architecture, and traditions.

In 1487, Málaga was conquered by the Catholic Monarchs, marking a turning point in its history. One of the city’s most iconic landmarks, the Cathedral of Málaga—popularly known as La Manquita (“the One-Armed Lady”)—remains unfinished due to a lack of funds at the time. Other remarkable monuments include the Alcazaba, a stunning Moorish fortress, and the Gibralfaro Castle, both offering breathtaking views over the city and the sea.

Málaga is also the birthplace of Pablo Picasso. The square where he played as a child still exists today, and his former home has been transformed into the Picasso Museum, open to visitors from around the world.

Calle Larios, the city’s main shopping street, features a blend of international brands, local boutiques, cafés, and ice-cream parlors. Wandering through the surrounding streets, visitors will discover an abundance of shops, restaurants, and lively bars.

To truly experience Málaga’s vibrant character, a visit to the Atarazanas Market is essential. This central market perfectly reflects the city’s cheerful and authentic spirit and is a paradise for food lovers. Here, most of Málaga’s restaurants source their fresh fish, meats, shellfish, fruits, vegetables, spices, and other local products—making it a cornerstone of the city’s rich culinary scene.
