“Lai Ching-te and his like who attempt to falsify history and split our nation will surely be condemned by history and punished by law.”

5. SOUNDBITE (Mandarin) Wu Qian, Defense Ministry spokesperson:
“Those who clamor for turning others’ homeland into hell should get ready for burning in hell themselves. In order to contain China with Taiwan, some individuals in the U.S. are making crazy and inhumane plans to turn the Taiwan Strait into a hell. This once again shows that the separatists who are delusional about using U.S. support for “Taiwan independence” will ultimately be abandoned as a useless pawn.”

7. SOUNDBITE (Mandarin) Wu Qian, Defense Ministry spokesperson:
“Taiwan belongs to China and China brooks no division. The PLA is able to fight and win in thwarting external interference and safeguarding the national sovereignty and territorial integrity. Threats and intimidation never work on us.”
8. Cutaway
9. SOUNDBITE (Mandarin) Wu Qian, Defense Ministry spokesperson:
“The NATO side has, in recent years, continuously elevated the role of nuclear weapons in its collective security policy, strengthened the 'nuclear-sharing' arrangement, upgraded and renewed the nuclear weapons deployed by the U.S. in NATO countries, and increased the risk of a nuclear arms race and nuclear conflict, which is bound to meet with resolute opposition from the international community. We call on NATO to stop spreading false narratives, nuclear blackmail and coercion and to refrain from going further and further down the wrong path.”

11. SOUNDBITE (Mandarin) Wu Qian, Defense Ministry spokesperson:
“In particular, on June 17, the Philippine side deliberately rammed Chinese vessels in a dangerous way and threw rocks at Chinese personnel. Relevant behaviors violate international law, endanger crews and ships of the two sides and undermine regional peace and stability. Facing infringements and provocation made by the Philippine side, the Chinese side has every reason to take law enforcement measures, which is completely legitimate, lawful and professional.”
12. Cutaway
13. SOUNDBITE (Mandarin) Wu Qian, Defense Ministry spokesperson:
“Ren'ai Reef (Second Thomas Shoal) issue has nothing to do with the U.S. It’s very dangerous and extremely irresponsible for the U.S. to encourage and support the Philippines in infringements and provocative actions. And it’s no use to threaten the Chinese side with the U.S.-Philippine Mutual Defense Treaty.”

STORYLINE:
China’s defense ministry lashed out against the president of Taiwan on Thursday, saying any attempts by Lai Ching-te to "split our nation" will be punished.

China claims Taiwan as its own territory and has been stepping up threats to annex it by force if necessary.

Responding to a question over a recent story in the Washington Post citing the new head of the U.S. Indo-Pacific Command on a strategy called “hellscape” that would see uncrewed equipment being used to defend Taiwan, Wu dismissed the plans as “delusional.”
