Subtracting Mixed Numbers with Unlike Denominators

Today I will show you how to subtract mixed numbers with unlike denominators.

In this lesson, we will see how to subtract mixed numbers or mixed fractions with unlike denominators. We will start the lesson with a brief review of the mixed numbers and the proper fractions.

With the first example, we will learn the procedure for subtracting mixed numbers with unlike denominators. We start by subtracting the whole numbers, then we subtract the fractions, and finally, we add the difference of the fractions to the difference of the whole numbers.

In the second example, we will practice the procedure we learned.

The third example is different than the previous ones. In this example, the second fraction is greater than the first fraction. In this case, we will follow a different procedure. We need to convert the mixed numbers to improper fractions, and then, find the difference.
