The Lavaux is a wine-growing region in the canton of Vaud in Switzerland on the north-eastern shore of Lake Geneva. The grape variety most widespread in Lavaux is the Gutedel, called "Chasselas" here. In December 2005, the Swiss Federal Office for Culture nominated Lavaux as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The International Council on Monuments and Sites, a subsidiary of UNESCO, recommended that the UNESCO Committee add Lavaux to the list in a report published in May 2007 after a representative of the organization visited the region in August 2006. On June 28, 2007, the decision was taken to record it under the name of Lavaux Vineyard Terraces with a view of the lake and the Alps.
Between heaven and earth, vines and lake, the paths meander through the vineyard terraces. Known for its scenic beauty, Lavaux is now a UNESCO World Heritage site, thanks to the work of man since the 12th century. Vineyard terraces were laid out on the steep slopes of Lake Geneva under the direction of monks as early as the 11th century. Since then, generations of winegrowers have tended and cared for this unique landscape. The winery extends over 40 kilometers and is one of the largest wine-growing regions in Switzerland. With its 14 villages, the cultural landscape impressively reflects how it was able to develop thanks to the balanced interaction between residents and the environment. The terraced, steep vineyards benefit from threefold sun and heat radiation: direct from the sun, reflection from Lake Geneva and heat stored by the many stone walls.
