The northern Italian metropolis of Milan (Milano) received a horse-drawn tram in 1881, with electrification starting in 1893. Despite numerous closures, often in connection with the construction of the metro, Milan today has the largest tram network in Italy with a total length of 116 kilometers and 17 lines.
To this day, numerous trams of the 1500 “Ventotto” series, which were delivered from 1928, are still in use. They are the wolrd's oldest tram cars in regular service and one of the city's most famous sights. Articulated trams from the 1950s and 1970s as well as Eurotram and Sirio low-floor trams are also used.
