Newer versions of this UUV, like the REMUS 620, have improved features including longer battery life (up to 110 hours) and greater range (up to 275 nautical miles), giving them capabilities like stealth and endurance that are unmatched over the course of many days. Because of the enhanced battery life, the UUV can go substantially farther to and from a mission location than prior unmanned vehicles could.

The energy modules in the new model are interchangeable, allowing for rapid turnaround and the introduction of different energy sources as they become available. The new UUV can deliver unrivalled mission capabilities for "mine countermeasures, hydrographic surveys, intelligence gathering, surveillance, and electronic warfare" because to its enhanced characteristics.

“Retaining a forward strategic advantage requires the ability to deliver a multitude of effects from under the sea,” said Duane Fotheringham, president of Mission Technologies’ Unmanned Systems business group. “The REMUS 620 is the first medium UUV designed to accurately deliver this range of advanced above-and-below water effects at long range.”

The vehicle was created to assist current and future naval and special missions. As a result, it has a modular, open architectural design that allows for smooth payload integration, as well as HII's Odyssey suite of advanced autonomous solutions for intelligent, robotic platforms.

It is also the same size and weight as the US Navy's Mine Countermeasure Squadrons, the US Naval Oceanographic Office, and the Submarine Forces' first and only full-rate production medium UUVs: the MK 18 Mod 2, Littoral Battleship Sensing-Autonomous Undersea Vehicle (LBS-AUV), and LBS-Razorback systems.

The advanced UUV is meant to function cooperatively with many versions at the same time and may be launched from "submarines, small manned or unmanned boats, amphibious ships, surface combatants, and helicopters." The REMUS 620 may also be used to launch and control other unmanned vehicles from under the water.

Finally, the conventional synthetic aperture sonar payload on the REMUS 620 may be changed or expanded for "multi-mission capabilities like as intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance, as well as cyber and electronic warfare."

REMUS 620 builds on the success of HII's REMUS platforms, which have seen over 30 years of innovation and the delivery of over 600 UUVs to 30 nations worldwide.

In 2018, a REMUS 6000 robot utilised its autonomous diving and sensing skills to assist Woods Hole Oceanographic Institute researchers in discovering over $17 billion in gold and other valuables that went down with a Spanish ship over 300 years ago. The ship was from the Spanish galleon San Jose.
