Avoiding cracks in buildings is a topic rarely looked by structural engineering students as they focus more on etabs tutorials and similar structural design training that focus on civil design software rather than practical aspects in civil engineering.This video is a part of series that will discuss cracks,reasons and crack patterns and its mitigation.
Micro cracks are un avoidable in buildings.This is since RCC is weak in tension.There is a limit to avoiding cracks.All we can do is to adhere to code provisions for crack widths by providing adequate design and quality control.
Minimum amount of rebars provided or the crack width checks can help in reducing the crack formation design point of view. Even if we meet this design requirement,there are many other construction related and materials and workmanship related points that can result in cracks.
