Most structural design courses do not focus on alternate methods and principles of structural design. In this structural design tutorial, I am discussing the structural design principles of filler slab. The structural design of filler slab is similar to the structural design of a solid slab especially if it is of short span and if the filler material width is not large. It can be considered as a solid slab.
Many times, young engineers are very new to alternative technology and am hoping that this vlog will introduce you to a simple and excellent alternate structural slab system
Void slab also known as filler slabs was used in construction from a long time. This structural design tutorial will discuss the materials that we can use as a filler in void slabs, the desired properties that the filler material should possess, the advantages of using this structural system, the disadvantages it has and many other structural topics. It also discusses the precautions one need to take to achieve durability and avoid leaking and rusting of rebars.
I am also discussing the analysis and design requirement of the filler slab in this video. All the construction arrangement is also explained with sketches.
Filler slab was in use in India as early as 1960s and Ar. Laurie Baker popularized this in India. Its very important that young engineers understand the history of alternative systems, understand its advantages and disadvantages and improve and innovate up on this structurally and make it more suitable for the current day requirements.
