Fallopian Tubes Importance & Tests to patency of tubes - Dr. Thejaswini

If you are trying to get pregnant for a long period of time with no positive results, then your gynaecologist might ask you to get your tubes checked. Tubes are fallopian tubes. Fallopian tubes are the tubes which pick up the egg form the ovary and transport it into the uterus the fertilisation of the egg usually happens in this fallopian tubes only. Fallopian tubes is very important for the fertility of a patient, there are many tests available to check if the fallopian tubes are clear or patent. One test we do on OPD basis is hsyterosalpingography. This hsyterosalpingography is done between day 5 to day 10 of the periods. It is slightly painful test. Maybe people will be able to take up the pain or of the patient is very apprehensive, it can be even done under short sedation or even anaesthesia, in this test we put a dye in the mouth of the uterus and we take an x-ray to see if the dye is coming out of the fallopian tubes. This dye being radiopaque is picked up in the x-ray. This hsyterosalpingography test shows the shape of the uterus or whether the tubes are clear or not. Second test to find out the patency of the fallopian tubes is sonosalpingography. Sonosalpingography is also similar to hsyterosalpingography where we put water or saline into the uterus and we do a scan to see if this fluid came out of the fallopian tubes. Here x-ray is not used and third test to find out if the fallopian tubes are clear or not is diagnostic hsyterolaparoscopy. Actually this is the gold standard to find out if the tubes are clear or not. In this test we put a small camera of about 5mm and make a small hole in the umbilicus of the patient and we out the dye into the uterus of the patient and we see with our own eyes whether the fluid came out of the fallopian tubes or not this test is slightly expensive and done and under anaesthesia. So these are the tests to see if the fallopian tubes are clear or not.
