Hello guys,
I'm Krishna Agrahari and I'll be discussing about limit test for sulphate.

Limit test -
This is a quantitative or semi quantitative test designed for identification and control of impurities present in the compound.

In limit test we compare test sample and standard sample & observe them.

In this video we are going to study about Limit test for Sulphate.

Principle—
Limit test of sulphate is based on the reaction of soluble sulphates with barium chloride in presence of dilute hydrochloric acid to form barium sulphate, which appears as solid particles (turbidity) in the solution.

Requirements -
Reagents
-Dilute hydrochloric acid
-0.5 M Barium chloride: 122.1 g of BaCl₂. 2H₂O dissolved in distilled water.
-Barium sulphate reagent containing 0.5 M barium chloride .
We can prepare this by mixing 15 ml of 0.5 M BaCl2, 55 ml of water and 20 ml of sulphate free alcohol. Add 5 ml of 0.0181% w/v potassium sulphate. Dilute to 10 ml with water and mix.

Apparatus
nessler cylinder
glass rod

Procedure
1. For test sample
Dissolve the specified quantity of the substance in distilled water and transfer it to the Nessler cylinder 'T'
  - Add 2 ml of dilute HCl.  
Make up the volume up to 45 ml.
Add 5 ml of Barium Sulphate reagent.
Stir with glass rod immediately and keep aside for some time.

2. For standard sample
Place 1 ml of 0.1089% of potassium sulphate solution in nessler cylinder 'S'
Add 2 ml of dilute HCl.
Make up the volume up to 45 ml.
Add 5 ml of barium sulphate reagent.
stir with glass rod and keep aside for some time.

Compare both cylinders after 5 minutes.

If the turbidity produced in sample is less than that of the standard , the sample will pass the test or vice versa.
