Let's dive into the worst food you should avoid if you have heartburn, acid reflux, or GERD symptoms. I generally tell my patients to avoid as much of these food as they can before going on to medications. Our diet and lifestyle have a huge influence on GERD/GORD symptoms.

1) Caffeine and Tea
Caffeinated beverages can stimulate excess production of acid in the stomach that would cause this acid to reflux into the oesophagus, thus promoting symptoms of acid reflux disease/GERD.

2) Mint
No matter how many times peppermint and spearmint have helped soothe your tummy. It is not a hidden fact that it is one of the triggering factors for the development of acid reflux disease (GERD/GORD). It does so by affecting the same door that every other beverage does and is the lower oesophagal sphincter that acts as a separate between oesophagus and stomach, thus preventing the stomach's acidic contents from getting into the oesophagus.

3)Tomatoes
Tomatoes and tomato products are packed with malic and citric acid, and therefore it can cause the stomach to produce too much gastric juice and aggravate heartburn symptoms. We're talking about fresh tomatoes as well as tomatoes sauces and of course Pizza! Yikes - don't hate me yet.

4) Your mum's cooking - well maybe - if it has too much salt, onions, oil or is spicy. I'll let you break it to her that your heartburn is down to her food. Just don't send this video as evidence. Cool, thanks.

5) Processed food and fatty food - delays gastric emptying and increases the chance for heartburn and acid reflux symptoms.

6) Alcohol - self-explanatory - can irritate the lining of the stomach - especially in when taken regularly. Try and avoid it if you have acid reflux.

7) Grapefruit and Orange
Tangy fruits are classic heartburn foods, and therefore it is better to avoid them. Orange and grapefruit decrease the ph of the stomach, thus disturbing the natural mucosal lining of the stomach.
