Many misrepresentations and misinterpretations have led to the common belief that Indian culture has a casteism-based social system. The four classes or Varnas are commonly described as Brahmin, Kshatriya, Vaishya and Shudra. Over time, the essence of this social system has been lost and people have come to believe that the rich and powerful occupy the higher classes and others are left at their mercy. But this is not true.
In the Bhagwad Gita, Lord Krishna Himself declares that the social classes are not by birth, rather they are given by the occupation of the person.
In the Skanda Purana, it is asserted that everyone is born a Shudra, but they can become Brahmins by their manners and good deeds.
If this is observed from a perspective of social priorities, the Brahmins were the one who were concerned with the maintenance, preservation and propagation of knowledge systems. And hence, it does not take long to realise that the Indian social system evolved around knowledge and wisdom bearers were given the highest status in society. Our culture was always a knowledge and wisdom-based social system.
