This is an introduction to restriction enzymes. We discuss the importance of restriction and modification systems in molecular immunity and how this property is exploited for use in molecular cloning. Different types of restriction enzymes are discussed with specific emphasis on type 2 systems - specifically 2P and 2S systems. From this discussion, we also learn about enzyme nomenclature, isoschizomers, neoschizomers, and isocaudomers. The video ends with a discussion on types of cleaved ends and star activity of restriction enzymes.
