Kobe Bryant Full Highlights
All Field Goal Attempts
LA Lakers vs LA Clippers
December 11, 2004
Staples Center

37 pts, 10r, 5a, 2b / 13-31 fg, 1-6 3pt, 10-10 ft

I decided to include all 31 of Kobe’s shot attempts in this one. Although misses do not count for points, they do hold value. Presented with all attempts, a sense of the game itself; the flow, the ups and the downs of his play can be greater understood. For instance, Kobe started poorly in this one, making only 2 of his first 8 shots. He then proceeded to go 11 for his next 23, totaling 31 points in just over 2 1/2 quarters of play. His slow start but very impressive progression amidst the matchup’s core may have been tough to gather without displaying all of his attempts. Additionally, misses hold value as a shot-creating display. An example of this would be Kobe’s “killer cross” pull-up on Maggette midway through the 1st quarter. It’s highly likely that Kobe couldn’t have cared less about that brick. But for us fans, the move itself or series of moves in other instances can still be substance worth appreciating.

I do plan on including all field goal attempts in future uploads; ones that I observe quality misses in, consequentially leading to a deeper reveal of Kobe’s overall performance.

During the 2004 summer, free agent (at the time) Kobe Bryant is said to have committed to joining the LA Clippers. Very influential Lakers’ personnel persuaded him back into purple and gold. This Lakers-road, Clippers-home matchup between the city rivals was the first since Kobe opted to re-sign with the Lakers.

The 2004-05 season was Kobe’s first as the clear-cut number one option and lead voice. Through his first 18 games, the averages were solid at 26.4p, 7.3r and 7.1a in nearly 43 mpg. This included 3 triple doubles. His game was evolving and his role as a distributor was expanding, but this didn’t come without growing pains. In those initial 18 games, Kobe was shooting only 39.7% from the field and tallying an uncharacteristically high 4.7 turnovers a night. He entered Staples on December 11th coming off back-to-back triple doubles. However, both contests saw him commit 8 turnovers.

This game against the Clippers was a bit of a turning point for Kobe statistically. He proceeded to log 31.5p, 6.2a and 5.6r on 42-35-79 (%) in his next 14 games. The assists had gone down, but the points went up. This makes light of a shift in his focus offensively, kind’ve similar to how Kobe’s ‘03 campaign transpired. After his inefficient 18 game start, Kobe’s next 48 were at 28.0p, 5.6a and 5.4r on 45-34-82 (%) with 3.9 topg. Although the Lakers missed the playoffs, ‘05 is still an intriguing version of Kobe. Without Phil, Shaq, key role guys like Fox, Fisher and Horry, Kobe was on his own, surrounded by a new coach and a bunch of young hopefuls looking to maintain consistent playing time. Quite the flip from his first 8 seasons.
