When you think of a scrappy player, John Starks comes to mind. He was a thorn in the side of guys like Michael Jordan and Reggie Miller for a decade in the 1990s, and held his own against everybody, no matter how overmatched he was. He was aggressive and ultra competitive and didn't let anyone intimidate him. It took him years just to get a chance with the Oklahoma State Cowboys, but he turned that into a shot at the NBA with Don Nelson's Golden State Warriors. But after a year he was again out of the NBA and would spend time in The CBA and WBL. But then he would land a spot in the New York Knicks training camp, and although he was injured by Patrick Ewing, it was a blessing in disguise as it kept Starks on the team long enough to get a chance. Starks would turn that chance into a nearly a decade in New York as a crucial piece to one of the most successful eras of Knicks basketball. He was a fan favourite on Pat Riley's Knicks, teaming with Ewing, Charles Oakley, Anthony Mason, Larry Johnson and Allan Houston. He had the highest of highs and the lowest of lows throughout his career, but Knicks fans had his back through because he represented that period of Knicks basketball perfectly,: Tough, resilient and refusing to give up. He had his famous plays such as "The Dunk" and is infamous moments like his 2 of 18 performance in Game 7 of the 1994 NBA Finals. But through it all, he showed up every night and gave his all, even his later year with the Warriors, Bulls and Utah Jazz. John Starks is an underdog who earned everything he got, but can be overlooked nowadays; yet in the 90s, you hated to see Starks on the schedule.
