Amy Sillman “To Be Other-Wise” at GLADSTONE GALLERY

James Kalm, once he’s started following the work of an artist, likes to keep an eye on their latest developments. Fourteen years ago, your reporter was able to record the opening of one of Amy’s breakthrough shows at Bret Sikkema Gallery. In the intervening period, Sillman has become one of the most widely recognized New York painters. The artist has mastered a nuanced painting technique that extends the legacy of Abstract Expressionism, while also presenting a very personal take on figuration, and text. This exhibition presents a selection of recent mixed media paintings, and a wall filling installation of nearly 70 works on paper titled “UGH for 2023-2024 (Torsos and Words)”.
