"Forty Six & 2" is a song by American rock band Tool. It was released as the fourth single from their second studio album Ænima in 1996 and received radio airplay. In March 2023, Rolling Stone ranked "Forty Six &2" at number 53 on their "100 Greatest Heavy Metal Songs of All Time" list.
A popular belief is that the song title refers to an idea first conceived by Carl Jung. Such an idea is further attributed to Drunvalo Melchizedek concerning the possibility of reaching a state of evolution at which the body would have two more than the normal 46 total chromosomes and leave a disharmonious state. The premise is humans would deviate from the current state of human DNA which contains 44 autosomes and two sex chromosomes. The next step of evolution would likely result in human DNA being reorganized into 46 autosomes and two sex chromosomes, according to Melchizedek.
Aenima is the second studio album by American rock band Tool.
Aenima debuted at No. 2 on the Billboard 200 chart upon its initial release, selling 148,000 copies in its first week. The track "Ænema" won the Grammy Award for Best Metal Performance in 1998. In 2003, Ænima was ranked the sixth most influential album of all time by Kerrang! Rolling Stone listed the album at No. 18 on its list of The 100 Greatest Metal Albums of All Time.
Tool is an American rock band from Los Angeles. Formed in 1990, the group's line-up includes vocalist Maynard James Keenan, guitarist Adam Jones and drummer Danny Carey. Justin Chancellor has been the band's bassist since 1995, replacing its original bassist Paul D'Amour. Tool has won four Grammy Awards, performed worldwide tours, and produced albums topping the charts in several countries.
It emerged with a heavy metal sound on their first studio album, Undertow, and became a dominant act in the alternative metal movement with the release of their follow-up album Ænima in 1996. The group's efforts to combine musical experimentation, visual arts, and a message of personal evolution continued with Lateralus and 10,000 Days, gaining critical acclaim and international commercial success. Its fifth studio album Fear Inoculum was released on August 30, 2019, to widespread critical acclaim.
Due to Tool's incorporation of visual arts and very long and complex releases, the band is generally described as a style-transcending act and part of progressive rock, psychedelic rock, and art rock.
