➡️ After my analysis of Tool's "Schism" and "The Pot" recently, "Forty Six & 2" won my poll from YOUR votes! I was excited to get back to a track from Ænima, which was released in 1996, and is the first album to feature bassist Justin Chancellor. During my research, I learned that he wrote most ALL of the riffs with incredible "spontaneous energy" as stated by Danny Carey in an interview. I can absolutely see why, because even on their second album, Tool had already mastered the raw, emotive intensity in their complex compositions. In this video, I break down the classic bass intro to the song, its use of the Phrygian Dominant scale, how Maynard James Keenan plays with the scale's tonality in the song's chorus, the song's subtle polyrhythmic layering, how their use of minor second intervals build tension, how the imperfections in the recording exude raw emotion, and lastly, doing my best to wrap my head around that INSANE drum solo from Danny Carey!
