III.

“Winter” from ‘The Four Seasons Suite’
Composer|Lo Leung-Fai
Conductor|Hu Bing-Xu
Concert|“Mu Guiying Leads Her Army to War” - Hu Bing-Xu & HCYCO
Date|2013.01.07
Venue|Hsinchu Performing Arts Center, Taiwan

Winter is the fourth and last movement of composer LO Leung-Fai’s “The Four Seasons”, which took him a total of six years to complete. The Chinese Orchestral piece is not so much about the changing weather and scenery of the four seasons, as it is about the composer’s own feelings and expectations about life, as expressed through the four seasons and their changing faces.

Winter was commissioned by the Hong Kong Chinese Orchestra when LO was a full-time musician with the orchestra from 1977 to 1986. Completed in Hong Kong on Aug. 22, 1984, the movement praises the bright side of the season of winter.

“Have you ever seen the snow beyond the Great Wall? Have you ever witnessed the chilly winter in northern China? Winter comes mercilessly with the north wind, snow and coldness… but it also comes with a majestic view and spectacular scenery, and a sign of harvest and infinite hope. The long winter is full of generosity, life and vitality.”

Introduction: The fast tempo is used to introduce the winter scene in northern China to the audience. This section paints the picture of a land covered in snow, the north wind whistling and blowing, and skilled athletes skiing swiftly across a snowy field.

Exposition: The slow tempo is employed to praise and show reverence for the winter scene in northern China. A hundred leagues locked in ice and a thousand leagues of whirling snow add to the magnificence of the view. Living creatures on the snow-capped mountains undertake a “Winter March.”

Development: Snowflakes flutter in the air and new life and infinite vitality are bestowed unto all living creatures on earth.

Recapitulation: This section shows people enjoying the winter carnival. Winter signifies an end to a year of hard work and the beginning of a new year. After winter comes spring – the season of infinite hope!
