Bappa Rawal was a legendary Rajput warrior king who ruled the Mewar region in Rajasthan, India, in the 8th century CE.
His real name was Kalbhoj, and Bappa Rawal was his title. He established his authority over Nagda and the surrounding regions (near Udaipur, Rajasthan).
According to legend, Bappa Rawal belonged to the Guhilot clan of Rajputs and was the 8th ruler of the Mewar dynasty.
He is credited with founding the city of Chittorgarh, which became the capital of Mewar during his reign.
Bappa Rawal defeated Junayd al-Murri through Saurashtra and back to the western banks of the Sindhu (i.e. current-day Balochistan). He then marched on to Ghazni and defeated the local ruler Salim and after nominating a representative returned to Chittorgarh.
As per some sources, Bappa Rawal and his armies conquered various kingdoms including Kandahar, Khorasan, Turan, and Iran and made them vassals of his kingdom.
After such a massive defeat, Arabs didn’t even dare to cast a glance towards Bharat, which is why Bharat remained uninvaded for approximately 400 years.
As time went on, in Mewar, great warrior kings such as Maharana Kumbha, Rana Sanga, Maharana Pratap Singh and so many others emerged.
The legacy of Bappa Rawal continues to inspire Rajputs to this day, with many Rajput families claiming descent from him and considering him a hero of their community.
