John Marston had been through many battles in his life, but none were quite like this. His body ached, and his mind was clouded with the lingering shadows of the fight that had just taken place. It wasn’t a typical brawl in the back of a saloon or a shootout with some petty bandits. This time, he had found himself up against something far darker—men who claimed to be servants of something ancient, evil, and far more sinister than anything he had ever encountered.
It started earlier that evening in the quiet town of Rhodes. John had arrived with a simple task in mind—deliver a message and move on. But as fate would have it, he stumbled upon a strange gathering in the forest just outside the town. A circle of men dressed in dark cloaks, chanting in a language he didn’t recognize. Their leader, a tall figure with piercing eyes and a malevolent grin, noticed John immediately. He knew this wasn’t something he should have interfered with, but it was too late. They had seen him.
Without warning, they attacked.
John fought with everything he had. The men were fast, unnaturally so, and strong beyond belief. They moved with the kind of precision and brutality that made John wonder if they were even human at all. He fired shot after shot, but these men seemed impervious to the bullets. His fists connected with one of their faces, but the man barely flinched before retaliating with a blow that nearly knocked John off his feet.
The fight felt like it lasted for hours, though it was only minutes. John managed to escape by the skin of his teeth, leaving several of the men unconscious or worse. But he knew this wasn’t over. He could feel their eyes on him as he fled through the forest, rain beginning to pour from the dark sky above.
The storm came in quickly. By the time John reached the edge of Rhodes, the rain was coming down in sheets, and the wind howled through the narrow streets. He could barely see a few feet in front of him, but he knew he had to find shelter—and fast.
As he staggered through the muddy streets, lightning illuminated the sky, followed by a deafening clap of thunder. The storm was fierce, as if nature itself was trying to wash away the evil he had just encountered. His body was drenched, his clothes sticking to his skin, and every breath felt like fire in his lungs.
Finally, he saw it—the train station in Rhodes, its lights flickering in the distance through the torrential rain. With the last of his strength, John pushed forward, his boots sinking into the mud as he made his way to the station.
He stumbled onto the platform, collapsing against the wooden wall of the station. The roof above provided some shelter from the storm, but the rain still found its way through the gaps, soaking the floor beneath him. He sat there, his chest heaving as he tried to catch his breath, the sound of the storm roaring in his ears.
For a moment, John thought he saw movement in the distance, shadows darting between the trees near the edge of town. The men from the forest? Or perhaps it was just his imagination, his mind playing tricks on him after the night he had endured. He gripped his revolver tighter, ready for whatever might come next.
But as the minutes passed and the storm raged on, no one came. The thunder rolled in the sky, and the rain beat down relentlessly, but there were no more signs of the cloaked men. John could finally allow himself to believe, for now, that he was safe.
He leaned his head back against the wall of the station, closing his eyes for just a moment. The sound of the rain on the wooden platform was oddly soothing, a contrast to the violence and darkness he had just escaped. He would survive this, just as he had survived everything else life had thrown at him.
But he knew one thing for certain—whatever those men were, whatever they worshiped, they wouldn’t forget him. And this fight was far from over.
For now, though, he could rest. The storm would pass, and with it, perhaps the darkness that had followed him would, too.
