This video talks about high uric acid, gout, anti - inflammatory diet and two helpful homeopathic medicines to treat gouty pains. It also discusses whether following a strict diet helps or not in reducing high uric acid levels and pains?

Firstly let us know what high uric acid level is. Uric acid is a chemical substance in our blood formed from break down of purines found in different foods. Initially uric acid was thought to be waste product which is eliminated in urine/stool. But recent researches have found that uric acid has its own utility in body. It acts as an antioxidant which is why our kidneys reabsorbs uric acid. The normal uric acid levels in blood ranges between 3.5 - 7.2 mg/DL. An increase beyond this cause its tiny crystals formation which stuck in joints leading to inflammation, swelling and joint pain. Gout is an inflammatory condition causing joint inflammation with severe pain. Gout from high uric acid mostly affects big toe though may also affect ankles and knees.

It is frequently seen that in patients with gout even following a strict diet does not decline the uric acid levels and relieve the pain. This is because the inflammatory environment (things that increase inflammation) in body is uncontrolled. Until this environment is not controlled the pains from high uric acid does not get better. These inflammatory things includes diabetes, obesity, fructose intake (sweetened beverages), insulin resistance, alcohol, vegetable and seed oils with high omega 6 levels and chronic stress. To reduce uric acid pains diet control does not matter to that extent as much as the reduction in inflammation levels does. Following a very strict diet (reducing purine intake from outside) won’t help as our body made purines in large extent through its own metabolic processes. The purines intake from diet does not make much difference but the inflammatory factors does.

Now let’s look into do’s and don’ts to reduce inflammation levels. The most important thing to reduce inflammation is losing weight. Next important factor is stopping/reducing alcohol intake and reducing sugar intake, high fructose intake, soft drinks. Further things include going for a walk (30 minutes) daily, reducing omega 6 and red meat intake. Taking kali mirch and haldi combination (1:4 ratio respectively) is very effective solution to reduce inflammation. Magnesium and potassium supplements can be very helpful. Next is reducing simple carbohydrates (you may replace plain chapatti with mixed grains chapatti and white bread with brown/mixed grains bread). If inflammation is not reducing inspite of these then following ketogenic diet (high protein and high fat content diet along with no or very low carbohydrate) might help. Lastly limiting dairy product especially liquid dairy (milk) and reducing stress level may help decrease inflammation.

Coming to homeopathic medicines to control gouty pains the most important is Colchicum Autumnale which is near specific for gout pain relief, especially for big toe pain. It can be taken in 30C potency (2 drops in half cup of water, four times a day for about one month). Second medicine is Ledum Pal - effective for ankle and knee joint pain. It can be taken in 30C potency - 2 drops in half cup of water four times a day. Next is Berberis Vulgaris, effective when kidney stones form due to high uric acid levels. Last is Kali Phos indicated to reduce increased inflammation levels caused by stress. It can be taken in 6X potency - four tablets four times a day.
