A lovely evening spent at London Euston on the West Coast Mainline where we see plenty of services from London Northwestern Railway, Virgin Trains and London Overground.

Theres so much to tell about this station but I won't go into everything.

London Euston was opened by the London & Birmingham Railway in 1837. It was the first intercity station to be opened in London and was planned by Robert and George Stephenson. When the station was first opened it was greated by an enormous archway covering the entrance to the station. Over its lifetime the station and the track have gone through several different owners: London & Birmingham Railway 1837 - 1846, The London and Northwestern Railway 1846 - 1923, London, Midland and Scottish Railway 1923 - 1948, British Railways 1948 - 1994, Raiktrack 1994 - 2002 and finally Network Rail from 2002 till now.

The station got its name from the Euston Hall in Suffolk. This was the ancestral home to the Duke of Grafton who owned the land that the station was to be built on.

From when the station was opened till around the 1900's the station went through so many upgrades because of the amount of people and trains wanting to use the station. New offices had to be built on and around the station which meant redevelopment of the sorrounding areas with new roads being built and old ones being built on, the station roof had to be raised in order for the newer steam engines to dispense of their smoke much easier. At first steam engines weren't allowed in the main station and were pulled by a cable instead. By 1891 there were 15 platforms at Euston.

When the LMS was in full swing the station became far to busy and as such was completely rebuilt with more platforms, better access to the station and wider platforms. As well as a hotel and more business offices.

By the Time British Railways got their hands on the station it was in dire need of tarting up, the soot from the steam engines had made the station look very unattractive. The arch had to be demolished and they were trying to find a way to get the station ready for the electrification of the West Coast Mainline, so during the 50's the station was once again touched upon.

But that wasn't the end of it. When privitasation took place the station was again under the spotlight to increase capacity by adding in 3 new platforms taking the total number up to 21, the main hall for the station was also done and very recently aswell. With new signs going in, better access to the London Underground network, more shops and dining areas popping up. Making the station look more tidy and modern.

The next phase of the development of the station will be for when HS2 comes along, Euston will be the London terminus of the line.
