I have few pots of basil in my backyard and love making homemade pesto occasionally. While it is a lot easier to make pesto using a food processor, it's so satisfying to use a mortar and pestle and mix the ingredients the old fashioned way.

This works if making a jar of pesto, if making big quantities, definitely use a food processor.
