Ride along on this instrument proficiency lesson as we fly an ILS in IMC conditions. The asphalt runway at our departure airport was closed, and although aircraft commonly use the adjacent grass strip to take off and land, the closure gave our local controllers a convenient - perhaps arbitrary - excuse not to issue a clearance, departure release and void time on the ground (I received one the following week, despite the asphalt still being closed). We also cover the paramount importance of proper power settings and the differences between Jeppesen and FAA approach plates.
