Seemingly every culture has a tradition of eating so-called lucky foods either on New Year's Eve or New Year's Day. This superstitious custom is prominent in Hungarian culture too! We eat lentils and pork, and preferably together.

Since lentils resemble coins, we'd like to think lentils will bring us luck and fortune. Since pigs instinctively root forward with their snouts, they represent this positive, forward-looking attitude. So pair the two ingredients, and you've got a double whammy against bad luck and misfortune. So with this in mind I'm presenting to you my lentil soup garnished with crispy sausage slices.

Whether you believe in this sort of thing or not, it's kind of nice to stay true to tradition, because ultimately you'll be enjoying a very delicious meal, with a slight chance of a prosperous new year to come. So why not!?
