The contestants, separated into two teams, competed in the traditional mise en place relay race. The tasks involved peeling and mincing garlic, dicing onions, turning artichokes, deveining shrimp, and shucking clams; the first team to complete all five tasks could hit the opposing team's "pause button", forcing them to wait out a three-minute penalty.
