Roland Barthes' The Death of the Author and The Death of God

This is a discussion of Roland Barthes’ The Death of the Author. I take issue with many of his assumptions but also make much of the fact that he regards his framework to be based on incontestable assertions.

I ultimately trace his assertion that authorship began in the nineteenth century to the perspective on the author given to us Romanticism, and note the echo in Barthes of Nietzche’s claim that “God is dead, and we have killed him.”
