Thalberg's fantasy on Beethoven's seventh symphony features a theme and variations on the famous second movement, which Wagner once called "the apotheosis of dance". Surprisingly, this fantasy also contains themes from Beethoven's fifth symphony, especially in the coda, which features the finale. Echoes of the scherzo from the fifth symphony are also heard throughout. The piece masterfully incorporates these well-known themes into a virtuosic, yet beautiful fantasy.
