For nearly a decade, an international team of researchers and technologists have traveled to the verdant hills of Tuscany to digitally reconstruct the ancient city of Volterra, Italy. Led by the Volterra-Detroit Foundation, a 501(c)3 research institute created by the Alumni and Faculty of the School of Architecture of the University of Detroit-Mercy, and with the support of the Superintendence of archeology of Pisa and Livorno, the celebrated traditions of design and making in Volterra are being re-discovered through the lens of technology.

This documentary takes a closer look at how the Digital Preservation Workshop at Volterra, supported by Case Technologies and Autodesk, tackles an agenda of innovation and deep practice in heritage preservation, bringing together the skills and passion of AEC practitioners from around the globe, and offering a testbed for AEC technologies from Autodesk, Epic Games, Cintoo, Leica, and many others. Through these efforts, and buoyed by the deep abiding love Volterrans show for their 3,000 year old walled city, the Workshop enriches how we can share and experience the past, while deepening our sense and appreciation of this irreplaceable place.
