Police escort abnormal load: 235 tonne generator

Police escort a large abnormal load, a 235 tonne generator, on a 55 metre long haulage of two trucks. BMW police cars and motorcycles clear the way of traffic, as the generator is escorted to a substation in Iron Acton in Gloucestershire, UK.

Due to the abnormally large load, the police have to escort the vehicle along the different motorways at 10-15 mph from Avonmouth to Junction 13 of the M5 and then back down it the opposite way to Junction 14 where the load is taken by local roads to the village. Also due to the weight, the load has to take such an unusual route to avoid weak bridges in the area.

At Junction 13 the load is met by roadworks and severe bends - so the entire haulage of the two trucks and the trailer with the generator has to reverse the wrong way around the roundabout whilst police shut off the roads to stop traffic getting in the way.

The whole operation takes a lot of planning and involves some unusual strategies working with the police, highways agency, local authorities, the organisation's load (National Grid in this scenario) and the company moving the load (Allelys in this scenario).
